To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must first apply to APU. The APU will then select eligible applicants to recommend to the scholarship organization .

About the scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to outstanding international students recommended by APU. The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology ( MEXT ) is offering this scholarship with the aim of enhancing international competitiveness and promoting the active exchange of international students in Japanese universities .

Eligibility criteria

• 1. Intend to study abroad in Japan from abroad
• 2. Not have Japanese nationality and be a national of a country which maintains diplomatic relations with Japan
• 3. Be born on April 2, 1986 or after
• 4. Have obtained a cumulative GPA of at least 2.30 on a scale of 3.00 at their most recent university

Notes:

• Those who are in active military service or civilians employed by the military at the time of application are not eligible for this scholarship.
• Recipients must be able to arrive in Japan during the arrival period stipulated by the APU.
• Those applying for this scholarship cannot have received a MEXT scholarship in the past unless they have more than 3 years of educational research experience after the final payment of the previous MEXT scholarship.
• Those who apply for this scholarship cannot apply for another MEXT scholarship.

• Recipients of this scholarship must have “student” as residence status (visa status) in Japan .

Price

• 100% of tuition fees (covered by APU tuition reduction scholarship)
• 144,000 JPY per month for living expenses (amount subject to change )
• Economy class air travel between home country and APU at the start and end of the program

Application and selection process

• 1. Submit the APU application by  November 18, 2020  (for registration in September 2021). Additional documents are not required to be considered for this scholarship.
• 2. The APU reviews the application documents and selects outstanding candidates for recommendation to MEXT.
• 3. The candidates selected to be nominated for this award are informed of the end of their application results in the APU.
• 4. The candidates selected complete and submit additional application materials MEXT to the APU.
• 5. The final results of the scholarships are decided by MEXT.

Final results

The final application and scholarship results will be posted on the admissions website on the date of final results notification . For information on how to view the final results will be sent by email. Please note that requests for final results will not be accepted.

The candidates admitted will not be allowed to reapply in the same graduate school for the same enrollment period.

Applicants abroad

All applicants residing outside of Japan , excluding Japanese nationals.

National candidates

All foreign nationals residing in Japan with visa status  other than short-term  (for example, a work visa or a dependent visa) and all Japanese nationals living in Japan or abroad.

The candidates who do not possess Japanese citizenship must have a valid visa to the time of registration to the APU. If your current visa expires within two months of registering with APU, please confirm with the Japanese Immigration Office whether or not you will be able to extend your current visa or change your student visa  before applying to the APU  .

Internal candidates

The candidates currently enrolled at Ritsumeikan University Asia Pacific (APU) or at Ritsumeikan University.
